In August 2024, Bangladesh saw significant political upheaval following the resignation of the Prime Minister, which led to the collapse of the regime. An interim government took control on August 8th, 2024, after weeks of intense, student-led protests, which culminated on August 5th. Sadly, more than a thousand people died between July and August 2024, and thousands were severely injured. This unrest has deeply impacted the country’s socio-political fabric, contributing to both domestic turmoil and heightened regional instability. The interim government now faces the task of restoring peace and stability while implementing much-needed judicial, bureaucratic, socio-economic, and political reforms to address corruption and monopoly in governance.

In addition to the political instability, Bangladesh has been struck by devastating floods and landslides in 11 northern and southeastern districts. Nearly 4.9 million people have been affected, with homes, infrastructure, livestock, and crops destroyed. Over 52 people have been confirmed dead, and many others remain missing. Those affected are struggling without food, clean water, or basic necessities, with many suffering from waterborne diseases and left homeless.

While government agencies, NGOs, and volunteers have been providing assistance, the scale of the disaster requires more substantial and coordinated relief efforts. The flood-affected populations are in desperate need of immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation support. If possible, please extend your helping hands to the vulnerable ones.

The forced displacement of people amid this instability is increasing vulnerability to human trafficking. In response to the country’s instability, Talitha Kum Bangladesh has been forced to cancel planned activities. We ask for your prayers as we navigate the political turmoil and the devastation caused by the floods. We believe there is always hope for better futures when we act and pray together.
