Talitha Kum Formation in Burundi: New Network

In September 2024, Talitha Kum organized a training in Gitega, Burundi, with the support of Talitha Kum/UISG, with the participation of consecrated persons and young ambassadors. The training aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking and build capacity for action against this phenomenon in Burundi.

The training was marked by poignant testimonies, notably those of two victims. A young woman recounted her experience of trafficking in a Gulf country before returning to Burundi, while a young man described how his hopes of emigrating to Europe were shattered in Kenya, leaving his family impoverished. These stories deeply touched the participants, some of whom were moved to tears when confronted with the reality of an issue of which they were unaware. Many expressed how much this exchange had awakened their conscience and their desire to get involved in this struggle.

Talitha Kum Burundi's young ambassadors have developed an action plan and made a commitment to act as spokespersons to raise awareness in their community about the dangers of trafficking. They also formed a coordinating office to manage activities and monitor implementation of the action plan over the course of the year.

The training was also aimed to encourage the Major Superiors association and religious congregations, reinforcing understanding of the various forms of trafficking and the importance of a collective response. The session ended with a visit from Rev. Bishop Blaise Nweyimana of Ruyigi, who encouraged consecrated persons to become more involved in accompanying victims.
