Wells of Hope Egypt Workshop: Understanding and Fighting against Human Trafficking
From August 28th to September 2nd, 2024, Wells of Hope Egypt (Talitha Kum network) hosted a workshop with forty five participants at the Saint Leo Seminary in Cairo, focused on raising awareness about human trafficking and fostering collaborative efforts among local and governmental organizations. The workshop brought together seven speakers including law enforcement officers, social workers, educators, mental health professionals, non-profit organization representatives, community members, and congregations.
Key Objectives:
- To educate participants about the scope of human trafficking.
- To provide practical strategies for identifying and assisting victims.
- To discuss legal frameworks and support systems available to fight trafficking.
- To foster networking and collaboration among stakeholders involved in addressing human trafficking.
Sister Marie Claude Naddaf, Talitha Kum regional coordinator for the Middle East, presented the Wells of Hope initiative and discussed a strategic plan for networking and prevention amid modern obstacles. She emphasized the importance of spirituality in healing, empowering, and reintegrating victims and survivors of human trafficking, a key mission guiding our work at Talitha Kum.
In Egypt, the Coptic Orthodox Church plays a vital role in supporting victims and survivors of trafficking and raising awareness about child marriages. Father Philippos Issa shared how the Church accompanies victims and survivors of human trafficking through a pastoral approach.
Major General Heba Abu Al-Amayem shed light on Egypt’s legal frameworks and protective strategies, noting progress made, but emphasized the need for improvements in legislation, enforcement, and victim support for effective prevention and protection. Ambassador Dr. Naela El Habr addressed how Egypt’s economic challenges influence perceptions of Sudanese refugees, stressing the need for increased international awareness and support. In response, Talitha Kum held awareness sessions for Sudanese women and children, and young migrants in Cairo, with assistance from the Combonian Fathers.
Overall, the workshop was a significant step in combating human trafficking in Egypt, providing valuable resources, and promoting partnerships necessary for empowering survivors and educating vulnerable populations. The collaboration between Wells Of Hope Egypt network, local organizations, health consultants and social workers is essential for providing trauma-informed care and holistic support to those affected by human trafficking.
