Talitha Kum at the VII Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants
On July 6th, 7th, and 8th in 2022, the VII Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants was held in Mexico City with the theme "Capitalism and Patriarchy. Institutional and community actions for eradication. Reflections in the era of COVID-19". The objective of the initiative is to generate theoretical, methodological and public advocacy reflections on the issue of human trafficking and illegal migration. On this occasion, Sister Carmen Ugarte, osr, Regional Coordinator for Latin America, and Sister Ana Maria Vilca, snjm, Coordinator of Red Kawsay Peru, were invited together with other researchers, academics, members of civil society, public officials, and other participants. They presented Talitha Kum’s vision and approach, as well as the actions of the Talitha Kum Networks at the grassroots during 2021 (see Talitha Kum Annual Report 2021), a year still marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
They focused as well on the "Talitha Kum Call to Action", the Talitha Kum and UISG Advocacy document launched in November 2021. The four verbs: Care, Heal, Empower, and Restore are a concrete call to ensure access to justice and assistance to victims, empower women and girls along with their families and communities, support safe and legal migration pathways and promote an economy of care and solidarity.
The sisters received important recognition from the organizers for the commitment of the Talitha Kum Network in Latin America in the fight against trafficking and for the care of victims and survivors.
